• George Washington University Hillel

George Washington University Hillel Onward Israel is geared towards students from GW looking to live and work in Israel over the summer. Students spend part of the program living, experiencing, and interning in Israel and the other part of the program at home working with their employer remotely. This opportunity stretches to a variety of different internship placements and allows students to gain experience in an international community.

Applications for Onward Israel George Washington Hillel 2020 are closed. Click here to be notified when applications open for Summer 2021.

The George Washington University Hillel Onward Hybrid program in the bustling start-up city of Tel Aviv offers you the opportunity to develop your professional future and build your resume through a high-level internship experience while also allowing you to spend time at home this summer. Participants will get to live with other GW students on top of travel and learn throughout the experience. In addition, there will be Israel Seminar Days throughout your time in Israel, amongst other activities devoted to learning about Israeli society, economy, technology and more, plus one weekend retreat with other Onward Israel – Masa participants from North America and the world. They have the freedom to live in and explore Israel in a more independent way than just visiting Israel on a trip focused on touring.

If health and safety conditions in Israel do not allow for the program to take place not, the program will shift to being entirely remote. The decision will be made by April 2020. Please note, if this happens, it will affect the types of internships available. Participants who do not wish to participate on an entirely remote program will be permitted to withdraw and receive a full refund for their program fee.

    Important Information

Admission is rolling. Applications will close in March or earlier if the program fills. Apply now!

You MUST be available to participate for the entire length of the program.

Note, there is a chance that health/safety conditions will require us to implement a 2 week quarantine upon arrival in Israel. There is also a chance that the program will shift to entirely remote if travel is restricted past a 2 week quarantine upon arrival. For more information, visit our FAQ responding to COVID-19

    Program Cost

The program cost includes housing, medical insurance, a modest food stipend, and ground transportation. Participants will be required to submit a $250 security deposit in cash upon arrival in Israel. Deposits will be refunded at the end of the program pending good standing.

All participants are responsible for the cost of and arrangement of their own flights.  Flight should not be purchased until a decision has been made about the viability of the program.

*If this becomes a remote program, the program cost will change to reflect this shift in expenses. The program cost will then be $150 and the difference will be refunded.

The actual cost of the Onward Israel program is much higher, and is subsidized up to 70% by Onward Israel, private donors, and local Jewish communities and institutions.

Additional scholarships for those who require additional financial assistance are available on a limited basis. For more information, call Onward Israel or your local partner professional.

This Onward Israel is operated through a partnership between the Beacon and Shapira Foundations and other leading philanthropists, George Washington University Hillel and Hillel International.

This program is ideally for students who have had one previous short-term Israel experience – such as Birthright Israel or a teen travel program – and for students who have a strong desire to be part of a GW student cohort and meet other GW students.

Participants will be asked to be flexible under these circumstances and Onward Israel is committed to making sure participants still have a professional and positive work experience.

    Remote Internship Opportunities
Participants will be paired with an Israeli company or organization and assigned work projects to complete over the course of the program. It is expected that participants complete their work projects during the designated dates of the program and fully participate in all required enrichment and education activities. Note that there would be a shift in the type of work conducted after transitioning from in person to remote work. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as even within a specific field, the nature of your work will change throughout the program.
